For the Truman National Security Project, Middle Coast implemented “Operation FREE,” a comprehensive constituency-building and grassroots advocacy campaign around the issue of national security and climate change. The focus of the campaign is on list-building, identifying Operation FREE as a leader on the national security implications of climate change, and establishing credibility with advocates, legislators, and the media.

A Little Background…

The Truman National Security Project is one of the nation’s most prominent national security leadership institutes. They work with a new generation of progressives around the country to build a network of influential leaders to advance a strong progressive national security policy.

Their most recent campaign, Operation FREE, is a coalition of leading Veterans and national security organizations who recognize that climate change is a major threat, and support fast, bold action. The goals of the campaign are:

• To develop a popular constituency around the national security implications of climate change

• To provide expertise on the national security and climate change issue with opinion leaders and media

• To propel Congress to take action on clean energy and green jobs

Middle Coast’s Program for Operation FREE

The Truman Project retained Middle Coast to develop and manage the “Operation FREE” online advocacy program, the related outreach and social networking campaign, and the Operation FREE website at www.operationfree.net.
Middle Coast worked with a designer and developer to build a site that made grassroots engagement a central focus by making sure site visitors have ample opportunity to interact with the content and provide their email address to the campaign.

We’re helping build an active constituency to support clean energy and climate change legislation.
Specifically, as a central part of the online advocacy campaign, Middle Coast provided the email program, grassroots outreach, and social networking for the Operation FREE “Veterans for American Power” tour in October 2009.

We’re mobilizing supporters to contact Congress, opinion leaders and members of the media in support of legislative action. The Operation FREE site and advocacy campaign serves as a platform for leadership on the national security implications of climate change to opinion leaders, the press, and the public.
